Feast Day: Our Lady of Sorrows

Just got back from a great ministry meeting and an even better rosary circle! I just wanted to stop in to let everyone know today we remember the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, for her role in our salvation. Mary was not only an instrument to God, but she was a Mother. Yes, she was the mother of our Messiah, but that doesn't make her any less "mom-like", she suffered many heart aches in the process of trusting God to fulfill this plan to save a dying world. So if you would just briefly meditate on/remember the darkest moments Our Lady endured during her life as both a Mother and a servant of the Most High:

  1. The prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:25-35)
  2. The flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)
  3. Loss of the Child Jesus for three days (Luke 2:41-50)
  4. Mary meets Jesus on his way to Calvary (Luke 23:27-31; John 19:17)
  5. Crucifixion and Death of Jesus (John 19:25-30)
  6. The body of Jesus being taken from the Cross (Psalm 130; Luke 23:50-54; John 19:31-37)
  7. The burial of Jesus (Isaiah 53:8; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42; Mark 15:40-47)
This feast is dedicated to the spiritual martyrdom of Mary, Mother of God, and her compassion with the sufferings of her Divine Son, Jesus. In her suffering as co-redeemer, she reminds us of the tremendous evil of sin and shows us the way of true repentance. May the numerous tears of the Mother of God be conducive to our salvation; with which tears Thou, O God, art able to wash away the sins of the whole world.

Thank you Mary for enduring all the pain my sin has caused you, and most importantly, the True and Living God. Pray for us that we may turn from our evil and follow Jesus with all our hearts.

Holy Mother, imprint deeply upon my heart the wounds of the Crucified.

Bismillah. If I'd had anything in my mouth while reading this, I would have choked on it. Fortunately I didn't, so I just ended up coughing instead. Let's see... Last time I checked, we have only one Redeemer (Job 19:25; Psalms 19:14; 78:35; Isaiah 41:14; 43:14; 44:6; 44:24; 47:4; 48:17; 49:7; 49:26; 54:5; 54:8; 59:20; 60:16; 63:16).

I did not get the impression from this post that Charisms thinks there is more than one Redeemer.

Charisms, would you mind emailing me through my blog? I didn't see a way to contact you here.

Bismillah. Maybe I am being hypersensitive here, but when I hear someone referring to Mary as a co-redeemer, it does have the implication that they are in some way departing from the uniqueness of the One Redeemer.

Caraboska, I am in no way implying we are redeemed by Mary...or that she is on equal playing ground with Jesus and His sacrifice. She did however play a role in the redemption of humankind. This website explains things:

Yes I will email you kkollwitz! Thank you for visiting my blog

Mary is co-redeemer in the same way that married couples are co-creators, collaborators with God. Without the free cooperation of husbands & wives, God's creation of more people could not happen. In being God's collaborators, we are not God's equals. Likewise a co-star, or a co-pilot, is not equal to the star or the pilot.

Since Mary was free to accept or decline God's offer of bearing his Son, Mary is indeed co-redemptrix. Without her free cooperation, Jesus would not have been born. And Mary, as the new Eve, had to be as free in that choice as Eve had been in hers.

And I should add, why does God leave such important things up to the cooperative (or uncooperative)actions of his creatures?

Because by doing so he shows how much he loves us, and how much he has dignified us.

After all, we are not God's slaves, but his dear children.

very good explanations! I especially like the bit at the end, I never thought of our free will like that ;)
